WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Republican U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney raised $100 million last month, his campaign said.

Spencer Zwick, Romney campaign finance director, told top fundraisers about the take during a sideline meeting at the Republican National Convention last week in Tampa, Fla., Politico reported Monday.

The August fundraising tally likely will be released publicly within the next few days. It would mark the third straight months the three main Romney-backing committees -- Romney for President, Romney Victory and the Republican National Committee -- combined to top the $100 million level.

Starting in May, Romney's committees began surpassing President Obama's fundraising efforts, Politico said, coinciding to when Romney began fundraising along with the RNC through Romney Victory, a joint fundraising committee that can take checks as large as $75,800, well more than the $2,500 he could accept during the primary.
