DETROIT, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Detroit officials approved placing a measure on the November ballot that would decriminalize marijuana and allow adults to keep a modest stash in their homes.
The Detroit Election Committee approved including the measure on the city ballot in November following a recent ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court.
The proposal allows Detroiters 21 and older to possess as much as 1 ounce of pot on private property. It was the subject of a two-year court battle that the high court ended with a ruling in June.
Backers of the measure said they were happy they finally prevailed, but were also miffed the city spent its time and resources trying to keep it off the ballot, the Detroit Free Press said.
Nearly identical propositions are on the ballot in Flint, Ypsilanti and historically conservative Grand Rapids.
