Last of cartel brothers extradited to U.S.

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The last of a family of brothers who ran a once-powerful drug cartel in Tijuana has been extradited to the United States, federal officials said.

The arrest of Eduardo Arellano Felix ends a 20-year struggle by U.S. law enforcement to bring the brothers to justice, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Arellano Felix, 55, had exhausted all of his appeals in Mexico prior to his extradition Friday. He was arrested in Tijuana in 2008.

Indicted in the U.S. in 2003, he was considered an adviser to the cartel -- which brought tons of drugs into the United States from Baja California during the 1980s and '90s. He is alleged to have ordered the killing of at least three people in the '90s.

The leader of the organization, Benjamin Arellano Felix, received a 25-year prison sentence in April. Javier Arellano Felix was arrested in 2006 and was sentenced to life in prison.

Ramon Arellano Felix was killed in a shootout in Mazatlan in 2002.

The group was believed to be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people, including Guadalajara Archbishop Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo in 1993.
