PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia police officer killed during a robbery as he walked to a bus stop was remembered Monday at the church where he was an active member.
Fellow police officers packed Evangelistic Deliverance Church for Moses Walker Jr.'s funeral, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The speakers included Mayor Michael Nutter, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and Walker's brother, William.
Also Monday, one of two suspects in the killing was returned to Philadelphia from Alabama, where he surrendered to the FBI Sunday. Police used Walker's handcuffs to restrain Chancier McFarland, 19, KYW-TV said.
Walker was gunned down Aug. 18 just after 6 a.m. He had finished his shift as a turnkey, responsible for prisoners at a police precinct, and was wearing civilian clothes.
Ramsey in his eulogy said that two young men Walker had dealt with as prisoners offered condolences to his family during a vigil, the Inquirer reported.
"It takes a great deal of skill and patience to be a turnkey, and Moses had that," Ramsey said.
Walker was unmarried and had no children. After 19 years with the Police Department, he was preparing for retirement.
McFarland had not been charged with the killing Monday but was charged with other robberies. Rafael Jones, 23, who was arrested last week in Philadelphia, was charged Friday with killing Walker.
