Prop triggers L.A. evacuation

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Fake dynamite triggered a real evacuation in Los Angeles after police said they found the item while searching a shooting suspect's apartment.

Los Angeles police swarmed a portion of Sunset Boulevard on Monday afternoon, evacuating nearby homes, businesses and locking down an elementary school before determining the dynamite was a movie prop, not the real thing, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The incident began when police received reports of someone firing a shotgun at a construction crew. Police took three men into custody, including one identified as the shooter.

No one was injured by the shooting, the newspaper reported.

As a bomb squad searched the suspect's apartment, officers found the prop explosives — along with a shotgun and other weapons.

The Times said police remain unsure how the suspect, who was not identified, got his hands on the fake dynamite.

"We don't know why he had it or how it came into his possession," officer Karen Rayner said.
