NEWARK, N.J., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A New Jersey letter carrier received packages of cocaine mailed to addresses on her route and passed them on to dealers, federal prosecutors say.
Christina Nunez, 30, of Lyndhurst was charged with conspiracy to possess cocaine and mail theft, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Monday. Her boyfriend, Luis Vega, 36, also faces a drug charge.
Investigators say drug traffickers mailed the cocaine from Puerto Rico, addressing the packages to places along Nunez's delivery route in Secaucus, N.J. Nunez allegedly scanned the packages as if they had been delivered and then took them to their real destination -- a drug organization in Camden, N.J.
The traffickers stopped using the route for months after an express mail package containing about 3 pounds of cocaine was seized in New Jersey, investigators said. In August, postal inspectors found another suspicious package sent from Dorado, Puerto Rico, and determined it contained cocaine.
Nunez and Vega were arrested last week when she returned home from work with the package.
