BRAWLEY, Calif., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Damage assessment was under way Monday in Southern California's Imperial County, a day after hundreds of earthquakes shook homes and businesses, officials said.
Injuries were reported but there had been no reports of deaths.
Some families were displaced, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Quakes up to 5.5-magnitude struck, the California Emergency Management Agency said.
Scientists said residents of Imperial, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties could be affected by additional earthquakes. The agency said seismic swarms could continue over the next several weeks.
"Cal EMA has been, and will continue to be, in close coordination with local authorities to provide assistance and provide timely information regarding the potential ongoing impacts of this event," Secretary Mark Ghilarducci said Sunday in a statement. "Today's [quakes serve] as a reminder to all Californians that an earthquake can strike at any time. Take time now to prepare your family with emergency supplies and a practiced family emergency plan."
Rob Graves, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey said the Brawley seismic zone has had similar earthquake swarms in the past, the Los Angeles Times reported. The zone sits between the San Andreas and Imperial faults.
The Imperial County Office of Emergency Services said some buildings were damaged by the quakes, including 20 mobile homes that shifted from their foundations.
Scattered power outages were reported.
At least three buildings dating back to the 1930s were damaged in downtown Brawley. Crews were still assessing other areas of the city.
