CHICAGO, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Rivalries within a gang likely were behind a drive-by shooting attack that left eight people injured in a Chicago neighborhood, police said.

Six victims were hospitalized, one reported in critical condition, the rest stable, officials said. Two others were treated and released.

Police in the vicinity of the shootings Thursday said they heard shots, saw a car with two people inside fleeing, then gave chase, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

Some of the people who were injured were not cooperating with the investigation, police said.

The vehicle was found abandoned near a motel, police said. Because the car was bullet-ridden and blood was found on the roof, police said they were investigating whether someone on the block returned fire.

Police said they believed the shooters may have been at the motel and tactical forces were sent there, the Tribune said. When police entered the first-floor room, they found it unoccupied but recovered several guns.

Police said they were searching for as many as three people who may have been involved in the shooting. One of them might have also been shot, investigators said.
