Women electrocuted trying to help in crash

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Two women who tried to help a driver who knocked over a light pole in Los Angeles were electrocuted, police said.

One of the women lived near the crash scene, and the other was driving by with her husband, KABC-TV, Los Angeles, reported. Both stepped into a pool of electrified water created when the driver of a sport utility vehicle hit a fire hydrant and an electric light pole.

Several other people, including a police officer, were injured by electric shocks, police said. The names of the victims had not been released.

The crash occurred Wednesday night near Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Witnesses described a scary scene. Everett Hernandez told KABC he heard one man yelling "Don't touch her," while someone else was calling "Somebody help her."

"I saw people. It looked like they were wrestling ... but what they were really doing is they were pulling people from getting electrocuted because there was a live wire under the water," he said.

The driver of the SUV was slightly injured. Investigators said he apparently lost control while taking a corner too fast. It was believed he had not been drinking, KABC said.
