GARY, Ind., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Unleaded regular gasoline from BP's Northwest Indiana storage facility is being recalled because it could cause hard starting or stalling, the company said.

BP issued a recall for gas shipped from the Whiting facility Aug. 13-17 after dealerships and service stations in the area received complaints from motorists who said they had difficulty starting their vehicles, Post-Tribune newspaper in Gary, Ind., reported.

The company didn't cite a cause for the troubled gas pending the outcome of tests.

Owner Tony James of Northwest Indiana Auto Supply said calls from dealerships and customers started Monday morning.

He said one Buick dealer in Merrillville had 30 inquiries about starting problems and eight vehicles were towed into a Chevrolet dealer with similar complaints.

"That's pretty unheard of," James said. "It's pretty widespread."

Service technicians who are draining gas tanks said they aren't sure what the problem is.

James said there are a myriad of possibilities from water to too much detergent additive.
