Suspected shooter gets plea extension

CHARDON, Ohio, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- An Ohio judge Monday offered defense attorneys time to file an insanity plea in the case of a teenager accused of shooting three students to death.

Geauga County, Ohio, Common Pleas Judge David Fuhry extended a plea deadline to Oct. 1 after the lawyer for Chardon, Ohio, High School student T.J. Lane, 17, said his client needed to see a neuropsychologist.

Lane was indicted in June after admitting to a Geauga County Sheriff's deputy he "killed a bunch of people," on Feb. 27, but could not explain why.

His defense hinges on questions of his sanity, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Monday.

Three students died and two others were injured after Lane fired ten shots with a handgun he said he had obtained from his uncle, the newspaper said.
