1 dead, 2 injured in Texas mall shooting
ODESSA, Texas, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- One man was killed and two others injured early Saturday when a gunman opened fire at the Music City Mall in Odessa, Texas, police said.
Police were en route to investigate a report of people refusing to leave the mall's Ten Sports Bar and Grill when shots were fired at about 1:35 a.m., the Odessa American reported.
A 23-year-old man and two others were taken to a hospital, the newspaper said. The 23-year-old, Pablo Jimenez, died at Medical Center Hospital from gunshot wounds, police said.
Jesus Garcia, 21, was released from the hospital and Jovanie Bernal, 19, was listed in fair condition, a hospital spokesperson told the newspaper.
The police said in a release the shooting suspect is a black man between 5-foot-10 and 6 feet tall and weighing 180-200 lbs.
A police officer told the newspaper a suspect had been apprehended but declined to confirm if it was related to the mall shooting.
Ambush suspects linked to anti-gov't group
LAPLACE, La., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The alleged leader of the seven suspects in the ambush of four sheriff's deputies in Louisiana has been linked by police to a violent anti-government group.
Detective Sgt. Angela Looney of the Robertson County (Tenn.) Sheriff's Office, said paperwork she found during her investigation of Terry Lyn Smith on child molestation charges last November led her to believe he was a member of the Sovereign Citizens, a loose group of anti-government organizations classified by the FBI as a domestic terrorism threat, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported Friday.
Smith, 44, is the apparent patriarch of the suspects accused of opening fire on four St. John the Baptist sheriff's deputies in LaPlace, La., Thursday, killing two of them and seriously wounding the others.
Smith was booked Friday with principal to attempted first-degree murder of a police officer. His wife, Chanel Skains, 37; his sons, Brian Smith, 24, and Derrick Smith, 22; Brian Smith's girlfriend, Brittney Keith, 23; an associate, Kyle Joekel, 28; and Teniecha Bright, 21, who lived at the same address as Joekel, all face charges in the case.
Philippines minister missing after crash
MANILA, Philippines, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Philippines Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo was missing Saturday after the small plane he was riding in crashed off Masbate Bay, authorities said.
Robredo's aide survived the crash, but the two pilots were also missing, civil aviation authorities told the state-run PNA news agency.
The pilots sent a distress call seeking an emergency landing at Masbate airport immediately before the crash, the Interior Department said in a Twitter that was later deleted, CNN reported.
Egypt's new president to visit Iran
CAIRO, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Egypt's president will attend a summit in Iran later this month, government sources told the Middle East News Agency Saturday.
President Mohamed Morsi will stop in Tehran August 30 on his return trip from China and will formally turn over the presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement to Iran at the organization's summit.
MENA said Morsi was personally invited to the summit by an envoy of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Egypt cut its diplomatic ties with Iran more than 30 years ago, however both nations expressed an interest in resuming relations following the ouster last year of longtime Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.
