MICHIGAN CITY, Ind., Aug. 16 (UPI) -- A Michigan man who died driving the wrong way on an Indiana interstate Thursday is believed to have killed his wife and two sons, police said.

Michael Van Der Linden, 38, left a rest area on Interstate 94 near Michigan City, Ind., and headed east in the westbound lanes. He hit a car in the center lane at about 1:35 a.m. Thursday, and both Van Der Linden and the other driver, Juan Nelson Jr., 45, of Portage, Ind., were killed, the Chicago Tribune and WSBT, South Bend, Ind., reported.

Police said they found the door ajar at Van Der Linden's Belleville, Mich., home and discovered the bodies of his wife and two sons, ages 4 and 7. All three had been stabbed to death, LaPorte County Medical Examiner John Sullivan told the newspaper.

"They want us to look for a knife in the vehicle, but the vehicle is completely burned up and destroyed," Sullivan said.

"There was no sign of forced entry. No sign of robbery," Police Capt. Gregory Laurain said.
