Mom says Texas shooter had mental problems

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- The gunman who killed a constable and a bystander near Texas A&M University had no prior run-ins with authorities, police said.

College Station Police Chief Jeff Capps said he wasn't aware of any previous law enforcement contact with Thomas Caffall, the Austin American-Statesmen reported Wednesday.

Capps said Caffall, had "some long guns and pistols" in his apartment but would not give details and did not say whether the weapons were obtained legally.

"The crime scene is still being processed," he said.

Caffall, 35, shot and killed Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann and bystander Chris Northcliffe after Bachmann approached his apartment to deliver an eviction notice Monday.

Three College Station police officers and a woman were injured in an ensuing shootout.

Cafall's mother, Linda Weaver, told CNN her son had been battling mental issues for some time.

A search of court records indicated Caffall's only run-in with law enforcement involved a traffic violation.

"It's hard to imagine that the really sweet kid you raised turned into a huge monster, and that is what he is now," Weaver said.
