NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Police in New York's Times Square Saturday shot and killed a man who was brandishing a knife and threatening bystanders.

Witnesses reported seeing a dozen officers pursuing the man, who ran through crowds and between cars. Police eventually cornered him near the intersection of 37th Street and Seventh Avenue and killed him in a hail of gunfire, The New York Times reported.

"He was swinging at people as he ran," witness Jobby Nogver, 17, of Boston, told the Times. "I can't tell you how many shots" police fired, he said. "It was a lot."

"He just started saying, 'Come on, come get me,'" Karon Rakes told the newspaper.

The man's identity was not released by police.
