Police: Boy's fatal overdose self-injected

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A 13-year-old boy who died of a heroin overdose administered the drug to himself, Los Angeles police said Friday.

Brett Cronin, 23, was arrested Thursday and initially accused of injecting the child with heroin after purchasing the drug and injecting himself, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Officer Rosario Herrera said police now believe the child injected himself.

Cronin called the Fire Department when the boy began experiencing convulsions about 8 hours after taking the drug, the newspaper said. He was found to be unresponsive and was later pronounced dead.

Cronin was being held on $1 million bail.
