BEDFORD, Mass., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The estranged wife of Robert Kennedy Jr. pleaded for her husband to take care of her the day before she hanged herself, the woman's caretaker told police.

However, Kennedy didn't act, telling the caretaker his wife "doesn't want to help herself," the New York Daily News reported.

The caretaker, who was not identified, told police she became worried about Mrs. Kennedy and contacted Robert Kennedy.

"I thought something was wrong with her," the caretaker said. "I told Bobby about her, and I told him that she needs help."

Mary Kennedy, 52, was found dead May 16 in the barn of her Bedford home. She and Robert Kennedy were getting divorced.

An investigative report by Bedford police said in Kennedy's last conversation with his wife he reported: "She told me she was sorry for everything. She said I was right about everything, and everything was her fault. She then told me she needed me to take care of her."

Mrs. Kennedy struggled with alcohol and drugs for many years, the report said.

She may have attempted to change her mind at the last moment. Her autopsy report found her fingers between her neck and the noose. She also had at least three anti-depressants in her system at the time of her death.
