AURORA, Colo., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- A psychiatrist treating alleged mass killer James Holmes asked the University of Colorado police to check his record, KMGH-TV in Denver reports.

The Denver television station, citing several sources, said Dr. Lynne Fenton dropped the matter after she was told Holmes had a clean record. She also asked the Behavioral Evaluation and Threat Assessment team at the university to consider his case but Holmes dropped out of the university, where he was a graduate student in neuroscience, before action was taken.

Holmes allegedly entered a theater in Aurora, Colo., during a midnight premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises" wearing body armor and heavily armed. He is charged with killing 12 people and wounding more than 50.

Psychiatrists told the TV station Fenton could have had Holmes sent to an emergency room or placed on a 72-hour hold for evaluation if she believed he was an immediate threat to himself or others. She apparently didn't do that.
