Parties to spend millions more in new ads

WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Democratic and Republican advocacy groups say they will spend millions more dollars for political advertising set to air on U.S. stations in the next few days.

As part of a $20 million campaign, Priorities USA Action will highlight the business record of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney while he ran Bain Capital, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Ads scheduled to begin running Tuesday in Iowa, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and Pennsylvania focus on how the closing of a steel plant owned by Bain Capital caused employees to lose their jobs, health insurance and pensions, sometimes with tragic results.

The company, GTS Steel, went bankrupt in 2001, two years after Romney left Bain to run the Salt Lake City Olympics.

Political activist group Crossroads GPS will spend $7.5 million to buy airtime to support Republican candidates in five important Senate races, The Hill reported.

Ads for races in Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota and Virginia will begin airing Wednesday.

All of those states are considered "tossups." The GOP needs to win four seats nationwide to take control of the Senate.

Crossroads GPS was founded by Karl Rove, a major strategist for the Republican Party.
