NEW YORK, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has called on his successor to "give a decent percentage of their own money" to the city as he did while in office.

Bloomberg has accepted $1 a year in salary, forgoing the $224,999 in pay he is allotted a year since he was first elected in 2002, the New York Post reported.

On Friday, while speaking on his weekly radio show, Bloomberg suggested that his successor do the same.

"I happen to think they should give a decent percentage of their own money, but that's up to them," he said. "... The next [mayor] is going to have to earn the respect of the business community, where the funding's going to come from."
