Wing of Pa. hospital to keep Paterno name

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The names of Joe Paterno and his wife will stay on Pennsylvania hospital wing despite the late coach's reputation being clouded by a child sexual abuse scandal.

Joe and Sue Paterno gave $1 million to expand a wing of the Mount Nittany Medical Center last year that added single-bed patient rooms and intensive care rooms, the Centre Daily Times in State College reported.

The Paternos' names are listed in the hospital's maternity unit. They were honorary co-leaders of the medical center's fundraising committee.

Other signs of the late Penn State football coach's presence have been removed since evidence surfaced that he was one of four top officials at the university who were aware of allegations assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was abusing young boys but did not report them to police. A bronze statue of Paterno that stood outside Beaver Stadium was removed July 22. The "Joegie" was taken off the menu at a university submarine sandwich shop.

The university's Paterno Library will retain its name and a university ice cream stand will keep its Peach Paterno flavor, with proceeds from the sales going to a charity for abused children.
