The sons reported Patrick Joseph Mikes Sr., 55, missing July 27, saying he never returned from a bike ride, The Detroit News reported. Police found Mikes Sr.'s bike helmet and riding shoes inside the house in Troy, Mich., as well as undisclosed evidence they believe proves he was murdered.
"We are now discounting that story — we are treating this as a homicide," Troy Police Capt. Robert Redmond said Thursday at a press conference.
"Investigators have been working with the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office and due to the type of evidence found it is highly unlikely someone would have survived," he added.
Neighbors told the News they saw investigators removed a blood-soaked carpet from the home during a search Sunday.
The man's son, Patrick Joseph Mikes Jr., 21, was released from jail Thursday on unrelated charges, but police have named him a person of interest in his father's disappearance.
Redmond said the younger son, Andrew Mikes, 16, is not a suspect and has been moved to live with relatives at an undisclosed location because police fear for his safety.
