Texas judge orders cold-case suspect held

BROWNSVILLE, Texas, July 24 (UPI) -- A 63-year-old man was ordered held in a Texas jail Tuesday pending extradition to Oregon to face murder charges in the deaths of two women in the 1970s.

Jeffrey Cutlip appeared before a judge in Brownsville Tuesday after being charged by the Portland cold-case squad with the slayings of Marlene Carlson, 44, in 1975 and Julie Bennett, 15, two years later.

The Portland police bureau said in a written statement details of the slayings and the investigation that led to Cutlip were being withheld for the time being.

Carlson was strangled in her apartment in the summer of 1975 and Bennett's body was discovered in a creek in 1977 two days after she disappeared.

Cutlip will be back in court Wednesday for a hearing on his extradition, the police statement said.
