Charges dropped in murder-for-hire case

HOUSTON, July 24 (UPI) -- Prosecutors Tuesday dropped all charges against Jeffrey Stern, a Bellaire, Texas, attorney accused of hiring three hit men to try to kill his wife.

Jeffrey Stern was accused along with his mistress Michelle Gaiser of plotting to kill Yvonne Stern in 2010. Yvonne Stern later forgave her husband and urged prosecutors to drop charges against him.

Paul Nugent, an attorney for Jeffrey Stern, said the Harris County District Attorney's Office dismissed all charges in the case, which was scheduled to go to trial Friday, the Houston Chronicle reported Tuesday.

Gaiser still faces charges of solicitation of capital murder and was expected to be the star witness against Stern, the newspaper said.

First Assistant District Attorney Jim Leitner said prosecutors "have come to the conclusion that, at this point, the available evidence is not sufficient to justify taking this case to trial."
