Police officer kills son

OLD FORGE, N.Y., July 23 (UPI) -- A police officer shot and killed his son at a motel in Old Forge, N.Y., believing his son, a fellow police officer, was an intruder, police said.

Michael Leach, 59, shot his son, Matthew, 37, early Saturday morning with his police-issued .45-caliber handgun, The Utica Observer-Dispatch reported. The two were spending a long weekend at the Clarks Beach Motel as part of a police motorcycle club.

Leach called an ambulance following the shooting. His son was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center and was pronounced dead.

Leach is a member of the police department of the village of Perry, N.Y., which employs 16 officers. Both lived in Rochester.
