ESCONDIDO, Calif., July 23 (UPI) -- A 1968 Piper airplane carrying four people ran out of fuel and was forced to make an emergency landing on an interstate in Escondido, Calif., police said.

Ken Gheysar, 48, was piloting the plane towards Carlsbad, Calif., when it ran out of fuel late Sunday, the North County Times (Escondido, Calif.,) reported.

"Since traffic was light at that hour he was able to land safely and make it to the right shoulder of the freeway," California Highway Patrol officer Jim Bettencourt said.

Authorities are trying to determine the best method of removing the plane from the area.
