Girls arrested for fake Facebook account

GRANBURY, Texas, July 19 (UPI) -- Two middle school girls in Hood County, Texas, face felony charges for allegedly impersonating a classmate on Facebook, officials said.

The girls, who were unidentified, were arrested Monday on charges of felony online impersonation for allegedly creating a fake profile for a classmate and bullying other classmates with the fake profile, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported Thursday.

"They put cuss words and made threats toward other students and basically cultivated a bad reputation for the victim," Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds said.

The girls, 13 and 12, used the fake account for about a month before investigators took notice. The 12-year-old victim and her mother were not aware of the cyberbullying because the victim did not have a real Facebook account.

"It is definitely bullying and this is still fairly new with Facebook and the social media that is out there," Deeds said. "It's just like identity theft but instead of trying to get a financial gain out of it you're just flat trying to hurt someone socially. It's against the law."
