Officials search for escaped prisoner

SPENCER, S.D., July 16 (UPI) -- Authorities said they still were searching for a prisoner who escaped custody near a gas station in Spencer, S.D.

Law enforcement personnel said Oscar Antonio Herrera-Menjivar, 31, escaped at a gas station along Interstate 90 early Saturday as a prison transport van traveling from Florida was fueling, KELO-TV, Sioux Falls, S.D., reported Sunday.

He was one of 13 prisoners being transported to a Nebraska facility in the private transport van that also dropped off an inmate in Wyoming.

Authorities warned the public Sunday that Herrera-Menjivar, originally charged with sexual assault of a minor, should be considered dangerous. Officials said the prisoner was 5-foot-5, 140 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
