WILLIAMSBURG, Va., July 16 (UPI) -- Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, a Democrat, was named chairman of the bipartisan National Governors Association during the weekend in Williamsburg, Va.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, a Republican, was elected vice chairman Sunday after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie backed off plans to take the slot, citing time constraints, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported.

"He is in an election year. Governor Christie called me and asked if I would move into the vice chairman's slot," Fallin told The Huffington Post. "He will wait for a better time. He is a great leader of the NGA. I was pleased that he offered me the opportunity and he said that there were other things he wanted to take care of in his state."

Christie spokeswoman Maria Comella said, "Considering all the pressing issues facing New Jersey right now, the governor felt it's not the right time to take on another national obligation outside of being [Republican Governors Association] vice chair."

Christie will remain on the NGA executive committee.
