Woman spent 3 days in car stuck in ditch

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 13 (UPI) -- A Florida Forest Service ranger rescued a woman who drove her car into a water-filled ditch and was stuck there for three days, officials said.

Joyce Gembecki, of Sanford, Fla., had gone out for a drive Monday and ended up 150 miles away in a state forest about 25 miles west of Jacksonville, Fla., the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Friday.

She drove down a dirt road and into a ditch filled with several feet of water, Baker County Sheriff Joey Dobson said.

The ranger found Gembecki Thursday with water covering her lap and the hood of her car. Dobson said it wasn't clear if she was physically unable to free herself from the car or if she was too scared to try.

"She was certainly confused, but I would have been confused if I was sitting in a car for three days without food or water," he said.

Gembecki, whose age was not reported, was treated at Baptist Medical Center Downtown in Jacksonville for dehydration and was expected to be returned to the senior apartment community where she lives.
