MABLETON, Ga., July 13 (UPI) -- A judge has upheld a murder charge against a Georgia mother accused of starving to death her 16-year-old daughter.

Ebony Espree Berry, 35, has been in jail since her June 15 arrest after police found her daughter, Markea Berry, dead in the family's home in Mableton in Cobb County, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Markea was described as mentally challenged, and police say she once wandered away from her home.

Investigators said they believe Markea suffered from extreme malnourishment but her mother didn't seek help for her, the arrest warrant said.

The Journal-Constitution said Berry's other children were placed in protective custody after Markea's death.

Berry was held without bond in Cobb County jail.
