Police discovered the body of Charles Zigler in the home of Linda Chase, 72, Friday and determined the body had been dead since December 2010, the Jackson (Mich.) Citizen-Patriot reported. Officials said Zigler was 67 or 68 when he died of natural causes.
"It's not that I'm heartless," Chase said Tuesday. "It's just that after so many bad things happen to you, I don't know... I didn't want to be alone. He was the only guy who was ever nice to me."
Chase said she and Zigler were close friends, but were not romantically involved. She said she had been cashing Zigler's benefit checks even before he died.
Jackson police and prosecutors are working to determine the charges against Chase.
