Most say Romney's wealth not a factor

PRINCETON, N.J., July 12 (UPI) -- The majority of registered U.S. voters say the wealth of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney doesn't matter, Gallup said.

Twenty percent of voters, mainly Democrats and independents, say Romney's wealth -- estimated at more than $200 million -- makes them less likely to vote for him, while 4 percent said it makes them more likely, results of a Gallup poll released Thursday indicated.

Independents break 42 percent for Obama and 42 percent for Romney, Gallup said. Their views on Romney's wealth reflect the national average, with 19 percent saying Romney's wealth makes them less likely to vote for him and 4 percent saying the opposite.

Republicans said they were slightly more likely to say Romney's wealth makes them more likely rather than less likely to vote for him, but most say it won't affect their vote, results indicated.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 873 registered voters conducted Tuesday and Wednesday as part of Gallup Daily tracking survey. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
