Lynn Jackenheimer, 33, Ashland, Ohio, did not return from the trip with her boyfriend, Nate Summerfield, who himself dropped out of sight shortly after he reportedly told his brother he had strangled the woman, FoxNews.com said.
The situation has left authorities with little to work with and increasingly long odds Jackenheimer will be found alive. "The longer it goes the worse it is," said Ashland County (Ohio) Sheriff's Capt. Carl Richert. "It's frustrating for us because we are trying to do everything we can."
FoxNews.com said deputies in Dare County, N.C., had been combing roads and beaches where the couple had been staying. The searchers noted the thick brush in much of the area made it an ideal place to hide something.
Summerfield returned to Ohio Sunday and left his two children –- ages 3 and 13 – with relatives before withdrawing money from an ATM and discarding his cell phone along a road. He has not been heard from since,
FoxNews said Summerfield's brother later called police to say Nate had told him he had killed Jackenheimer.
