Brees said he will not report to training camp when it begins on July 24 or sign a franchise tender with the Saints if the team and him do not agree to a long-term contract by that day, ESPN reported.
If Brees does not have a contract by Monday, he will be required to play next season under the franchise tender, the report said. Brees will receive $16.371 million under the franchise tender but would not be allowed to sign with other teams as a free agent.
The Saints have offered Brees a contract of $19.25 million per year. Brees is asking for a contract of $20.5 million per year. If the Saints place the franchise tender on Brees next year, Brees will receive $23.57 million.
It is unclear whether Brees will report to the Saints' first regular season game Sept. 9 against the Washington Redskins, the report said.
