GRAND ISLAND, N.Y., July 9 (UPI) -- A sports utility vehicle driving down the wrong side of a highway in western New York collided with a car, killing three people and injuring two, officials say.

The incident happened early Monday on Interstate 190, The Buffalo News reported.

Three passengers in the car were killed in the collision while the drivers of both vehicles were injured and transported to a local hospital where they are listed in critical condition, police said.

Police said they are investigating how the driver of the SUV, an 87-year-old man, ended up on the wrong side of the highway.

It is undetermined whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident, police said, adding that the driver could have been disoriented.
