SANFORD, Fla., July 4 (UPI) -- George Zimmerman's lawyer says his client should get bail because he could spend a year awaiting trial in Florida only to be acquitted of killing a black teen.
Lawyer Mark O'Mara made the argument on a Web site, The Miami Herald reported. Zimmerman argues that he shot Trayvon Martin, 17, in self-defense after the teenager attacked him, while prosecutors say Zimmerman, a Neighborhood Watch volunteer, "profiled" the teen as a criminal and then persisted in following him after a police dispatcher urged him to back off.
"At the June 29 bond hearing, the defense submitted a number of exhibits into evidence in an effort to demonstrate the weaknesses of the state's case against George Zimmerman and illustrate the strength of Mr. Zimmerman's claim of self defense," O'Mara said Tuesday.
Seminole County Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester says he will release his decision on reinstating Zimmerman's bail, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported. Lester earlier revoked his bail, finding he had been misled about Zimmerman's financial resources.
O'Mara posted testimony from a physician's assistant who treated Zimmerman the day after the killing in February. She said he had a broken nose, black eyes and cuts on the back of his head.
