Priest charged with child pornography

WATERFORD, Conn., July 3 (UPI) -- A former priest at St. Paul Parish in Waterford, Conn., was charged with first-degree possession of child pornography Tuesday after turning himself in.

State police put out a warrant for Carey's arrest after Los Angeles police alerted them to a possible suspect in Connecticut linked to a child pornography investigation. Police seized computers from the church and discovered the child pornography.

The Rev. Dennis Carey, 56, surrendered himself to state police and resigned as a priest Friday, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported. He had been a priest for 14 years.

Carey's bail was set at $100,000. Carey's attorney said he planned to post bail quickly and see a doctor. He is a diabetic and recently completed chemotherapy for colon cancer. He also recently had a heart attack.
