BLOOMFIELD, Mich., July 3 (UPI) -- A Bloomfield Hills, Mich., woman accused of killing her grandson had to listen to his pleading 911 call in her preliminary examination, court records show.

Sandra Layne, 74, has been charged with open murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The Detroit Free Press reported she was bound over for trial following three hours of testimony Monday.

Layne's grandson, 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman, could be heard pleading with the dispatcher on the May 18 call: "My grandma shot me," he said. "I'm going to die, help."

Hoffman told the dispatcher he had been shot in the arms and chest. When officers arrived to Layne's condominium, they heard multiple gunshots. The police report said Layne emerged minutes later, her hands covered in blood, crying, "I murdered my grandson."

Court records depicted the aged woman breaking down frequently while the tape played, wiping tears from her eyes.

The Detroit News reported police found a bloody 9mm Glock semi-automatic handgun on the floor in the home. Upstairs, police found Hoffman face down, shot five times. One officer testified he witnessed Hoffman take his last few breaths before dying.

Layne's attorney said she feared her grandson, who was living with her on probation after a marijuana conviction, and bought the gun for her own safety. An autopsy report showed Hoffman's urine tested positive for the drug Spice, also known as K2, which is a kind of synthetic marijuana.
