GREENVILLE, N.C., July 2 (UPI) -- Severe thunderstorms generating winds up to 80 mph churned across the Greenville, N.C., area Sunday afternoon, killing at least three people, authorities said.

William Henry Adams, 77, was killed when high winds toppled a farm building he was in, The (Greenville) Daily Reflector reported.

The National Weather Service said a man and a woman were killed when a tree fell on a golf cart in Beaufort County, where about 40 people were injured, the newspaper said.

The storms left more than 15,000 homes without electrical power, the newspaper said.
