Students suspended for taunting monitor

GREECE, N.Y., June 30 (UPI) -- Four students at a middle school in upstate New York have been suspended for a year for their recorded taunting of a school bus monitor, officials said.

The Greece Central School District said in an announcement Friday the four will also work with senior citizens for 50 hours of community service, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported. School Superintendent Barbara Deane Williams said the boys, all students at Greece Athena Middle School, and their families waived their right to a due process hearing and agreed to the punishment being publicized.

The YouTube video showing Karen Klein, 68, a veteran school bus driver and monitor, being verbally harassed on a school bus June 18 went viral on the Internet. Klein, a grandmother of eight, became internationally famous and has received $667,000 in donations, money she said she will use to pay bills, help her family and for charitable giving.

Klein declined to file criminal charges against the four but said she wanted them to be punished by the school.
