Cornell fraternity found guilty of hazing

June 28, 2012 at 1:46 PM

ITHACA, N.Y., June 28 (UPI) -- The Cornell University chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was found guilty of hazing and other charges in relation to the death of George Desdunes.

An Ithaca, N.Y., judge found the fraternity guilty of first-degree hazing, unlawful dealing with a child and second-degree criminal nuisance Tuesday, the Ithaca (N.Y.) Journal reported.

On Feb. 25, fraternity pledges kidnapped Desdunes, 19, and brought him to an off-campus townhouse. He died hours later of alcohol poisoning.

Three individuals, whose names were not released, were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing for their involvement in Desdunes' death. The fraternity may be sentenced to a fine of $12,000.

Cornell University withdrew recognition of the fraternity after Desdunes died, and the chapter has since disbanded.
