Pilato said he waited until Sandusky's sexual abuse trial was over to paint the image of Penn State graduate Dora McQuaid in the chair Sandusky occupied in his mural, CNN reported Wednesday.
McQuaid is a poet and advocate for sexual abuse victims. She currently lives in New Mexico.
Pilato said he received dozens of e-mails from survivors of sexual abuse asking him to paint over the image of the disgraced former assistant football coach.
He also added a blue ribbon, symbolizing awareness for child sexual abuse, to the Penn State Nittany Lion in the right-hand corner of his mural.
Sandusky remains in jail following his conviction last week on 45 counts related to child sexual abuse.
Two former Penn State officials, Vice President Gary Schultz and Athletic Director Tim Curley, still face prosecution in the scandal.
Court proceedings involving the two ex-administrators are expected to begin in mid-July, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania attorney general's office said.
