NEW YORK, June 26 (UPI) -- Rielle Hunter said Tuesday she and former U.S. Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., are "no longer a couple" following the publication of her tell-all memoir.

In an interview on the ABC's "Good Morning America," Hunter refused to say which one of them made the break. She said she still loves Edwards and believes he still loves her but the strain of the very public relationship wore them both down.

Hunter and Edwards, who have a daughter, Frances Quinn, began their affair while Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, was dying of breast cancer.

"We are a family, but as of the end of last week John Edwards and I are no longer a couple. Not at all," Hunter said.

The most controversial parts of Hunter's book, "What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me," deal with Elizabeth Edwards. Hunter called her a "witch on wheels" and said she lied to Edwards' staff, screamed at her husband and even physically attacked him while keeping up the public appearance of a supportive and forgiving wife.

Hunter said if she was put in the same situation she would not repeat the mistake of having the affair. She became Edwards' mistress during the 2008 presidential campaign, after Elizabeth Edwards had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
