Rice: No interest in being Romney VP

June 26, 2012 at 8:20 PM   |   Comments

WASHINGTON, June 26 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Tuesday "there is no way" she would become Mitt Romney's running mate.

Asked on "CBS This Morning" whether she would turn down Romney if asked, Rice said: "I'm saying there is no way that I will do this, because it's really not me. I know my strengths, and Governor Romney needs to find someone who wants to run with him."

Rice said she's not even that into politics.

"I love policy. I'm not particularly fond of politics," she said.

Rice, who served as secretary of state under President George W. Bush, said of the No. 2 spot on the Romney ticket, "There are many people who will do it very, very well, and I'll support the ticket."

On foreign policy, Rice said, the United States cannot "lead from behind."

"The United States has to have a view, it has to gather people around that view, and frankly, I think we need to do more of that, and the last several years I think we've been lacking on that front," she said.

On Syria, she said: "Let's make alliance with those who understand that Syria will never be stable with [President] Bashar Assad in place. Let's help the opposition to organize. And Syria will be better off [without] Bashar Assad and so will the Middle East."
