MILWAUKEE, June 26 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday it had settled a complaint against a Wisconsin livestock company and its improper medication practices.
The consent decree between the government and Dan Nolan Livestock LLC, based in Bonduel, Wis., concerns inspections of the firm which revealed an animal sold for slaughter in 2011 had excessive and illegal antibiotic drug residues, a Department of Justice statement said.
The government's complaint asserted adulterated food was introduced into interstate commerce, and the consent decree, to which the defendants agreed, requires the livestock company cease operations until it can prove to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration violations have been corrected.
"When farms fail to maintain appropriate controls concerning the medication of food-producing animals, they jeopardize the public health," Stuart F. Delery, acting attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Division, said in the statement.
The proposed consent decree awaits judicial approval in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.
