LOS ANGELES, June 22 (UPI) -- A convicted Los Angeles serial rapist was sentenced to death for sexually assaulting and killing a 16-year-old girl in 2003.
Latece Megale Brown, 41, Thursday was given the death penalty for the sexual assault and murder of Jacquiese Williams, as well as the rapes of four other women, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Prosecutors said Brown picked Williams up, sexually assaulted her, then sat on her until she died. He then wrapped her in a comforter, set her ablaze and dumped her in an alley. Williams' body was found Oct. 24, 2003.
"I hope he is tortured as he tortured my granddaughter," Williams' grandmother, Clara Owens, told the judge before sentencing. "God, please forgive me, but that's how I feel."
One of Brown's other victims, identified only by her first name, Andrea, was present in court for the sentencing.
"Seeing him with no remorse makes me feel like the sentence was justified and appropriate," she said afterward.
Brown has maintained his innocence throughout the trial and claimed all of his alleged sexual assaults were consensual. His attorney, Franklin Peters Jr., said Brown plans to appeal the conviction and death sentence.
"Obviously, he hopes that the appellate courts will remedy that at a later date," Peters said.
