'NATO 3' indicted in Chicago

CHICAGO, June 20 (UPI) -- The so-called NATO 3 have been indicted for allegedly plotting to attack the Obama campaign headquarters in Chicago and other targets, officials said Wednesday.

A Cook County grand jury returned an 11-count indictment last week against activists Brian Church, 20, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jared Chase, 28, of Keene, N.H., and Brent Vincent Betterly, 24, of Oakland Park, Fla., the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Along with the president's re-election campaign offices, the trio are accused of planning to firebomb Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's home, police stations and squad cars during last month's NATO summit in the city.

The suspects are to appear before a judge July 2, the newspaper said.

The charges against them include providing material support for terrorism; conspiracy to commit terrorism; four counts of possession of an incendiary device; conspiracy to commit arson; solicitation to commit arson; attempted arson and two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon.

All three remain in jail. Their attorneys contend their clients were entrapped by undercover officers posing as activists and that the charges are overblown, the Sun-Times said.
