State troopers said the man, identified as Arvid Nelson Jr. of Kotzebue, apparently took his own life, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

State police spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said the trooper who was shot was hospitalized in stable condition and the second trooper, who was either grazed by a bullet or shrapnel, was treated for a head injury and released, the Daily News said.

The two troopers were injured when the gunman opened fire as they approached the truck on foot using the doors of a law enforcement vehicle as shields.

Ipsen said the troopers and Kotzebue police fired back, but it wasn't known whether any of the shots struck Nelson.
