June 17, 2012 at 7:00 PM

GARDINER, N.Y., June 17 (UPI) -- A prominent real estate developer and a skydiving instructor died in a tandem jump in New York state, officials said.

Police said Manhattan real estate developer David Winoker, 49, and skydiving instructor Alexander Chulsky, 25, of New York City were killed during a jump Friday afternoon near Gardiner, The (White Plains) Journal News reported.

While witnesses at the scene told police it appeared there was a parachute malfunction, the skydiving school's owner told YNN Hudson Valley reported the chute had opened properly.

The cause of the accident was being investigated.

Friends said Winoker was skydiving as part of a friend's 50th birthday party, the newspaper said.
